The vain little rat
Once upon a time, in a small corner of a lush forest, lived a mouse who was very vain. She resided in a cozy little hole that she had decorated with great care and taste. One day, while sweeping her doorstep, she found a gold coin. «Oh, what luck I have,» she thought. «Now I can buy something nice to make myself even more attractive.» The mouse headed to the market, where she bought a brightly colored ribbon. Wearing her new purchase, she strolled around the neighborhood, hoping to catch the eye of a handsome suitor. It didn’t take long for her to get what she wished for. Soon, several animals approached her, captivated by her beauty. The first suitor to present himself was a rooster. The other animals of the forest gathered around, excited to witness this unexpected event. An elderly Owl was chosen to officiate the race, and he marked the starting and finish lines. «The race will begin at this line and end at the large oak tree on the other side of the forest,» said the Owl, pointing with his wing. «Will you marry me, beautiful mouse?» crowed the rooster. The mouse asked him, «Do you know how to sing? I want you to sing for me every morning.» «Yes, of course I know how to sing,» replied the rooster. But the mouse was not convinced, as she did not like the noisy tone of the rooster. So she declined his offer and continued her search. Había una vez, en un pequeño rincón de un frondoso bosque, una ratita que era muy presumida. Vivía en una agujita confortable que había decorado con mucho mimo y gusto. Un día, mientras barría su puerta, encontró una moneda de oro.
«Oh, qué suerte la mía,» pensó. «Ahora podré comprar algo bonito que me haga aún más atractiva.»
La ratita se dirigió al mercado, donde adquirió un lazo de brillantes colores. Luciendo su nueva adquisición, la ratita se paseó por todo el vecindario, esperando llamar la atención de algún apuesto pretendiente.
No tardó en conseguir lo que deseaba. Pronto, se le acercaron varios animales que habían quedado cautivados por su belleza. El primer pretendiente en presentarse fue un gallo.

El siguiente en intentar conquistar su corazón fue un gato. «¿Me concederás el honor de ser tu esposo, preciosa ratita?» preguntó el gato.
«¿Sabes ronronear?» indagó la ratita.
«Por supuesto,» respondió el gato, ronroneando suavemente.
Aunque le gustó el sonido, la ratita recordó que los gatos comen ratones y, con un suspiro, tuvo que rechazar también esta propuesta.
Finalmente, apareció un ratón, tímido pero honesto. «¿Te casarías conmigo?» preguntó con humildad.
La ratita le pidió que chillara para ella, y cuando escuchó su dulce chillido, supo que había encontrado a su pareja ideal.
