A long time ago, in the quaint town of Hamelin in Germany, people lived in peace and prosperity. Their fields were fertile, and the Weser River provided plenty of fish. However, one day something terrible happened: a plague of rats invaded the town. The rats were an absolute nightmare. They devoured everything in their path: grain, clothes, and even wooden furniture. The villagers tried various ways to get rid of them, from traps to poison, but nothing worked. Despair began to spread. One day, a man dressed in colorful clothes and carrying a flute arrived in the town. He presented himself before the mayor and offered a solution. «I specialize in solving problems like this. If you pay me a sum of one hundred gold coins, I will rid Hamelin of all its rats.» Desperate, the mayor agreed to the deal. The piper went out to the main square and began to play an enchanting melody on his flute. As if by magic, all the rats came out of their hiding places and started to follow him. The piper led them to the Weser River and continued playing until all the rats fell into the river and drowned. Triumphant, the piper returned to claim his reward. However, the mayor, now relieved from the absence of rats, became stingy. «I think one hundred gold coins is too much for such a simple job,» he said. The piper felt betrayed and warned there would be consequences if he did not receive fair payment. Seeing that he would not get his gold, the piper returned to the main square. This time, he played a different, yet equally enchanting melody. All the children of the town began to follow him, just like the rats had. He led them out of the town, to a nearby mountain, where they disappeared into a large cave. The entrance closed behind them, and they were never seen again. The town of Hamelin learned a harsh lesson about the value of keeping one’s word, and the cost of greed. They lived in sorrow and regret, forever remembering the lesson the piper taught them—a lesson that became a legend told from generation to generation. Hace mucho tiempo, en la pequeña ciudad de Hamelin, en Alemania, la gente vivía en paz y prosperidad. Sus campos eran fértiles, y el río Weser ofrecía pescado en abundancia. Sin embargo, un día, algo terrible sucedió: una plaga de ratas invadió la ciudad.
